This department is responsible for both internal and external communications for OCFA and serves as liaison to the OCFA Board of Directors as well as OCFA's member-cities.

The Communications and Public Affairs Department facilitates many of the traditional organizational communications functions that include public information and media relations, public education and community outreach, legislative affairs, and multi-media services.

Communications and Public Affairs also provides support to the Fire Chief and Executive Management staff on special projects designed to keep the public and other agencies informed about OCFA.

The department is organized into four groups; Public Information and Media Relations, Education and Community Outreach, Legislative Affairs, and Multi-Media Services.


Public Information and Media Relations

Overseen by a Battalion Chief and staffed by a Captain, the office ensures that the public is kept informed during major incidents. The PIO acts as the spokesperson for OCFA during daily requests from reporters as well as during major incidents. The PIO ensures that accurate and timely information is released to the public. The BC also assists with news releases, board advisories, and community outreach.


Education and Community Outreach

This group is responsible for large-scale educational campaigns and community outreach events. This group also creates messaging material and delivery systems to promote public awareness. Campaigns in which they are involved include but are not limited to drowning prevention, wildfire awareness, fire safety, and neighborhood smoke alarm installations.


Legislative Affairs

Staff identifies and tracks local, state and federal legislation that could impact OCFA. All legislative analysis is submitted to the board for their position on bills. In cases where the board takes a position on legislation, letters on the bill are often sent on behalf of the board. This section also manages the grants application process for all OCFA grants.


Multimedia Services

This section is responsible for all OCFA's audio, video and photographic needs. Staff produces a monthly video newsletter, covers the firefighter academies, manages all audio and video for monthly executive committee and board of directors meetings, and designs a wide variety of OCFA informational material.
