Storm Safety

The Orange County Fire Authority would like to provide some tips on how residents can deal with heavy rains and storms.

BEFORE THE STORM
  1. Keep food, water, a first-aid kit, candles, a flashlight, a radio and extra batteries stored for not only storms, but earthquakes and other emergencies.

  2. Keep your car filled with gas. If electric power is cut off, gas stations might not be able to operate.

  3. Know safe routes from your home or office to high, safe ground.

  4. Keep sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting and lumber handy for emergency waterproofing. Fill your sandbags shortly before the expected storm. Filled sandbags stored for long periods of time are ineffective.

  5. If flooding is likely, and time permits, move essential items and furniture to upper floors of your home.

DURING THE STORM
  1. Do not try to cross a flowing stream where water is above your knees. You could be swept away by strong currents.

  2. Do not drive over a flooded road. You could be stranded and trapped.

  3. If your car stalls, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. Many people drown while trying to save their cars.

  4. Avoid unnecessary trips. If you must travel during the storm, dress warmly. Advise others of your destination.

  5. Use the telephone only for family emergency needs or to report dangerous conditions.

  6. Tune to a local radio or television station for emergency information and instructions from local authorities.

AFTER THE STORM
  1. Do not turn the gas back on yourself. Rely on utility company crews.

  2. Do not use fresh food that has come in contact with flood waters.

  3. Follow local instructions regarding the safety of drinking water. If in doubt, boil of purify water before drinking; have wells pumped out and the water tested before drinking.

  4. Avoid flood areas. Your presence could hamper rescue and other emergency operations and you might be in danger.

  5. Do not handle live electrical equipment in wet areas. If electrical equipment or appliances have been in contact with water, have them checked before use.

  6. Use flashlights not lanterns, matches or candles to examine buildings. Flammables may be inside.

  7. Avoid downed power lines and broken gas lines. Report them immediately to the electric or gas company, police our the fire department.

  8. Stay tuned to radio and television for information and instructions from local authorities.
